Get these electrifying Colorado tax credits before they expire

Are you ready to save money on how you get around—and help improve our air quality? Whether you scoot, bike or drive, there’s a way for Coloradoans to save some serious dough on transportation this summer.

More of a home body? You’re covered there, too, because Colorado offers some serious discounts on switching your lawn and garden equipment to electric so you can enjoy a cleaner, quieter neighborhood. Plus, Colorado just launched a new tool to help you find savings on home efficiency upgrades.

Read on to learn how you can save on a new EV, e-bike or scooter pass, get discounts on electric lawn equipment, and find rebates on energy and efficiency upgrades like heat pumps right now.

EV and plug-in hybrid vehicle credits

The current $7,500 federal tax credit on electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids will end on Sept. 30, 2025, so if you are interested in a discounted EV, now is the time to buy. The state of Colorado also offers a tax credit, and this is scheduled to run out at the end of the year, on Dec. 31.

Colorado’s refundable EV tax credit adds a $3,500 discount to the $7,500 tax credit. If you’re buying an EV with a MSRP below $35,000, you’ll get another $2,500—a total of $13,500 off your car.

Leases on EVs are also eligible for the credit, and you can get a tax credit up to $4,000 or 30% of the purchase price on a used EV.

With the federal tax credit expiring and the Colorado tax credit dropping to $1,500 on Jan. 1, 2026, this is the time to buy or lease an EV!

The more you know: Tax credits directly reduce amount of tax owed to the IRS, while tax deductions reduce the amount of your income subject to tax. A “refundable” tax credit means you receive part of the credit as a tax refund if it reduces your tax bill to a negative number.

E-bike tax credits and vouchers

Any Coloradoan can get a $450 discount on a qualified e-bike by taking advantage of the Colorado e-bike tax credit. Not every e-bike is eligible, and you’ll need to buy your e-bike at a retailer participating in the Colorado e-bike program—the retailer passes the $450 discount on to you. You’ll need to show proof of residency with a Colorado driver’s license or ID or other proof of a physical Colorado address.

The City of Denver also offers e-bike vouchers to residents of households earning less than the area median income and people with a disability. The voucher on top of the state tax credit can cover up to $900 of an e-bike purchase.  The program releases a new set of vouchers every two months, and the next e-bike voucher release is set for Sept. 30.

Boulder offered e-bike discounts in the past, but the program has been paused for 2025.

Discounted and Lime and Bird scooter passes

Electric scooters are an easy and fun way to get where you’re going, and they also happen to be a win for air quality. (Please do stay in the bike lanes and off the sidewalks, though!) But did you know that you can get discounted Lime and Bird passes in Denver?

Any residents of the city can apply for Denver’s 5280 Mobility Pass, while supplies last. The current program is set to continue through 2025, though city council will vote on potential new vendors for the program for spring of 2026 early that year.

Bird and Lime both offer needs-based discounts as well. Lime Access is available for those enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Social Security supplemental income, and several other programs, as well as Pell Grant recipients.  Bird’s Access Program also provides discounted rides for those enrolled in or eligible for a government-assistance program.

A new program, called First Mile Free, will pay for Lime and Bird users to travel up to a mile to two stations in different parts of Denver starting in 2026 and 2027.

30% off when electrifying your lawn and garden equipment

Did you know you can get a 30% discount on electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers and snow blowers at participating retailers statewide through 2026? The Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG) compiled a list of participating retailers. Please call a retailer in advance to confirm participation as companies may start or discontinue participation.
